More e-bikes mean an increased risk of collision

On Behalf of | Jul 21, 2024 | Car accidents

E-bikes are changing the way we ride. People who make deliveries and messengers find they can service more clients on e-bikes, and more commuters are turning to biking for their daily rides.

But, with the increase of e-bikes on the streets, there is a greater opportunity for a catastrophic accident between bikers and motorists. Therefore, it’s crucial for both to remember some basic safety rules.

Sharing the road

Undoubtedly, e-bikes make riding on two wheels easier and faster than your traditional bike. However, the same rules apply. To ensure their own safety while sharing the road with motorists, e-bike riders should keep the following in mind: E-bikes are subject to the same traffic laws as regular bicycles. Therefore, riders must:

  • Obey traffic signals, signs and road markings. Always ride in the direction of traffic and use bike lanes whenever possible.
  • Use hand signals to communicate your intentions.
  • Avoid weaving in and out of traffic. This makes it difficult for drivers to see you and anticipate your actions, increasing the risk of an accident.
  • Enhance your visibility by wearing bright or reflective clothing. Equip your e-bike with front and rear lights.
  • While e-bikes can reach higher speeds than traditional bikes, it’s crucial to ride at a speed that you can manage safely.
  • Avoid riding on sidewalks, as it poses a danger to pedestrians.
  • Practice defensive driving and anticipate the actions of other road users.

Meanwhile, motorists can do their part by:

  • Maintaining a safe distance
  • Checking their mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes or making turns
  • Using turn signals
  • Avoid driving or parking in bike lanes
  • Check for cyclists before opening their car door

The most important thing for everyone to remember is to stay vigilant. Be aware of your surroundings and avoid distractions. Everyone has a part to play in ensuring road safety and reducing the risk of injuries and fatalities of e-bike riders.
